Made from wormwood, the spirit was once thought to induce hallucinations, leading to its ban in 1912 in several countries. Despite this, absinthe remained a symbol of artistic and literary rebellion, with figures like Ernest Hemingway, Vincent van Gogh, and Oscar Wilde embracing it. Hemingway even created the cocktail Death in the Afternoon, a mix of absinthe and champagne.

The goal of La Fée Verte's packaging was to visually narrate absinthe’s legendary past, incorporating elements of mystery, history, and ritual into the design while maintaining a sophisticated and modern appeal.
